Women Dual Diagnosis
Sober Living For Women. Reset, Refresh & Energize
Early recovery can be an exciting time, full of possibilities, but it can also be a frightening time. Even women who were reluctant to go to treatment often report feeling a great deal of anxiety when it comes time to leave treatment for the “real world.”
Women leaving rehab who have a dual diagnosis face unique difficulties. Years of drug or alcohol use have often masked other, underlying issues. Women recovering from addiction often suffer from PTSD, eating disorders, depression and anxiety. Sometimes these problems were present before the substance use, often contributing to the addictive behavior. In other situations, these conditions have come about as a result of the drug and alcohol use.
The discomfort, fear and stress often experienced by women in early recovery can make it difficult to maintain sobriety. When you are newly clean and sober you may feel an overwhelming urge to go back to the people, places and things that you are familiar with. This can lead to relapse. Having a safe place to go to after treatment can be a determining factor in a successful recovery. If you are a woman who has a dual diagnosis, you may be especially vulnerable, because you no longer have substances to mask underlying issues, such as PTSD or depression.
A living environment that is safe and supportive can help you stay focused on yourself while building a solid foundation of recovery. Staying with family members or friends, no matter how well-meaning and supportive is not always a good idea, especially if the relationship was strained due to drug use or other issues.
Developing supportive relationships with other women in recovery, as well as attending 12 step meetings is essential when you are starting out on your journey. Giving yourself time to heal, and to pursue healthy activities can help you learn to enjoy your recovery and discover who you are.
